Midland Youth Championships – Chief Coach’s Gala Report

Belper Marlin SC had 13 swimmers at these champs and there were some great performances with plenty of PB times.

The final results gave us 1 gold medal, 2 silver and 1 bronze with 12 finalists over the weekend.

The gold medal was for Sam Brookes who powered through in the final of the 15 y/o 100m breaststroke to take the gold medal in a club record and PB time of 1.09.15.

He then followed this up with a silver in the 200m breaststroke with another fantastic club record time of 2.32.04.

Isabel Purgavie had a great weekend medalling twice with 2nd place in the 15 y/o girls 100m backstroke and 3rd in the 200m backstroke.

Caitlin Oram also came agonisingly close to her first regional medal, falling just 0.02s short in taking 4th place in the 16 y/o girls 200m butterfly.

Our other finalists and top 10 finishes are listed below;

Sam Brookes (15 y/o) – 200 IM 4th, 100m fly and 100 free – qualified for finals but withdrew.
Caitlin Oram (16 y/o) – 100m fly 4th
Dan Waterfall (16 y/o) – 100m breast 5th.
Joshua Horobin (Open) – 100m breast 7th.
Phoebe Barden (15 y/o) – 100m free 8th.

Combined together with our results from the Midland Age Groups and the earlier sprints weekend, Belper Marlin SC achieved 1 Gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, and 21 finalists at the regional championships overall.

These performances come at a difficult time of year during GCSEs and A levels. It takes a great deal of time and dedication to get to this level and our swimmers can be rightly proud of firstly qualifying and secondly swimming so well in these championships.
